Until fitting of CO detectors becomes law we are sadly going to see more deaths I am afraid. The facts should be digested by all to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and are available on most responsible websites.

Until lending criteria is relaxed I can not see that house prices will rise too much in the future. The Banks simply do not have the money to lend to high risk customers with only a small deposit.

Hi
I can understand the above comment and liken the current situation with buying a car. Do you pay more money upfront with less ongoing costs or do you put less down with higher ongoing costs therefore not paying as much up front but probably paying more in the long run. With running a newcastle estate agency we are finding the majority of people just dont have a choice because of the strict lending criteria with regards deposits, etc. They are having to rent which is obviously strengthening the rental market. I will also mention that there are still buyers looking to purchase a home especially in affluent areas although, this must be at a value price.
Thanks
Ash, Newcastle Estate And Letting Agent

I think we're heading towards an impasse in the uk housing market, as you say sellers would rather stay put than reduce prices, first time buyers are priced out and the lack of access to mortgages due to strict lending criteria and high fees all colludes to create a standstill and hints at a price drop at some point.

It's amazing how everyone is fully aware of the need for smoke alarms yet fairly oblivious to the real dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless so its virtually impossible to detect without a suitable alarm. Hopefully with this being on Eastenders it will encourage more people to fit detectors and help save lives.

HI there, this is a real problem at the moment and I feel the pain of first time buyers.

Housebuilders are offering incentives and deals to attract buyers and first time buyers, but I don't think they are going far enough. Potential first time buyers are being squeezed all round, probably by paying off student loans, receiving very little interest being paid on savings accounts that they have for house deposits, so they need all the help they can get. I don't think the incentives go far beyond the no stamp duty to pay, free legal fees, £X off, help with selling an existing house, and they have to give much more than that in this current climate. Also there will be the added worry about the slump of prices in the current market, because at the end of the day nobody knows how far the market will slump

There are many flats and houses that are still not being snapped up, despite all kinds of incentives on them.

The current state of the economy has forced people to rent instead of taking the first step onto the property ladder. Many are deciding to ride out the low economy and see how the market progresses before thinking about ownership.

This comes as no surprise. Although the UK is gradually recovering from the recent recession, confidence is still low and lending and successfully applying for a mortgage is still very difficult without serious financial backing.
